Daytona Beach 2010

We took the Z4 down to Ormond Beach (just north of Daytona Beach) for Beverly's birthday week (April 30 - May 8) and had a great time.  Below are a few of the 200 or so photos that we took (shown in chronological order), and I've added some trip notes at the bottom of the page.

A starfish that we saw on our first walk on the beach ...

Not far north of Ormond Beach is Beverly Beach, so we stopped on our way to St. Augustine on Beverly's birthday to snap a photo.

Self-photo using our little tripod, taken on the Ocean Walk in Daytona Beach.

And of course we took the Z4 on the beach!

Dusk as the tide was washing out ...

A few minutes later ... the curved place in the background is the place where we stayed.

Driveway to one of the state parks in the area.

Washington Oaks State Gardens.

We bumped into this guy during our tour of Washington Oaks State Gardens.

Sunrise on the day we were leaving ... pelicans trolling for breakfast.

We stayed just south of Memphis and ate at John Daly's!

Memphis ... waiting to tour the Gibson guitar factory.

I know a guy that made a guitar out of toilet seat, so this seems a bit backwards to me ...

A few semi-random trip notes:

bulletWe stayed at a place called the Outrigger in Ormond Beach ... a small place (about 60 rooms) with small rooms, but a nice pool area and perfect location on the beach ... apparently popular with the locals also, if you get my drift.
bulletOn Monday we ran up the coast to St. Augustine and walked around the shops ... several cool places to browse (okay, we didn't just browse!), but it was anything but cool ... in fact, it was so hot that we almost didn't want to run with the top down!  This was a recurring theme all week, as temperatures were very hot (90's) all week, including a few records ... lows got only into the mid-70's a few nights.
bulletThe beach sand was so fluffy that there were only a few stretches of the beach that we felt safe taking the Z4 onto ... some stretches were allowing only 4WD vehicles.
bulletWe spent most of Thursday visiting several state parks ... great scenery.
bulletWe decided to leave a day early so that we could take a more circuitous route home and stop in Memphis, where we toured the Gibson guitar factory and strolled up and down Beale Street for a couple of hours before jumping back into the car for the final leg of the return trip.

Some of the places that we ate during the week:

bulletBubba Gump Shrimp Company ... May 2 ... excellent food and environment ... a definite place to stop when in town
bulletGodfathers Pizza ... May 3 ... Beverly's choice for her birthday meal ... no eat-in joint within 60 miles, so we took it back to the condo
bulletOcean Deck ... May 4 ... sort of a sports bar place, right on the beach ... good food and beverage, and we a great view of the beach
bulletStarlight Diner ... May 5 ... a bit disappointing, actually
bulletSantora's Pizza ... May 6 ... a bar-type joint, but great calzones!
bulletJohn Daly's (just south of Memphis) ... May 7 ... good food, interesting menu ... I was surprised that there weren't more people there at 9pm on a Saturday night
bulletMiss Polly's Cafe (Beale St.) ... May 8 ... great food, very unique menu, but I think our waitress was having a bad day ... Beverly had a meal called the "Hen House", which included a fried chicken breast, a Belgian waffle, and mac-n-cheese!
