2004

We stepped it up to eight tournaments in 2004 (plus a ninth tourney with Lynn and Matthew), and had a very good year by pretty much any system of measurement.  One victory and four runner-up finishes highlighted the season, and we finished in the top five in all eight tournaments, so we were very pleased.

T-2nd Wow . . . FOUR runner-up finishes this year . . . we're getting a little bit of a Phil Mickelson complex . . . this tourney was the same format as last year, 2-ball on Saturday and best-shot on Sunday . . . we played fairly well, and Debbie in particular hit some wonderful shots, but our putting was not so great . . . we shot 79-67 = 146, and 143 (72-71) won it.  On Sunday, we had birdie putts inside about 15 feet on each of the first 7 holes but only made two very short ones -- in fact, I think we only made one put over about 5 feet on Sunday (and that was for par!), but we didn't have any bogies, which helped a lot.
Fonda 2-ball

(September 12, 2004)

2nd For the 3rd time this year, we were a bridesmaid, but this time it was only by one stroke.  We played well and shot 37-34 = 71 with 4 bogies and 3 birdies, but someone else shot 70.
Briggs Woods (Webster City)

(August 8, 2004)

T-4th This was a mixed best shot (scramble), and we struggled early, bogeying two of the first three holes.  But Debbie played well and we gathered ourselves up a bit after that, ending up with 69.  There was a 64 and two 66's ahead of us.
Newell 2-ball

(July 25, 2004)

3rd Once again, we started slowly and doubled two of the first five holes, but recovered nicely for a solid 75 . . . unfortunately, two couples shot 74, so those doubles were very costly.
Spring Lake 2-ball

(July 24, 2004)

2nd We struggled all day and shot 84 (43-41) with two doubles and a triple . . . but apparently we weren't the only ones who struggled, as 82 won it.
Eagle Grove 2-ball

(June 20, 2004)

2nd It was our first time on this par 35 course.  The women hit the tee shots on the even holes (2, 4, 6, & 8) each round, and the men hit the tee shots on the odd holes, which helped balance our *very* poor play.  We were +5 after 3 holes and shot 84, but everyone struggled with the format because ended up 4 strokes ahead of 3rd place -- but 9 strokes behind the winners!
Twin Lakes 2-ball

(June 19, 2004)

5th We didn't play very well (or perhaps we expected too much?), but we managed a 74 and finished 5th.  Ahead of us were 65, 66, 67, and 73, so we would have had to play extremely well to get into the top 3.
Lincoln Valley 2-couple Alternate Best Shot

June 6, 2004

T-13th A strange format, but a fun day.  Lynn and Matthew joined Debbie and me.  We rallied to shoot 72 after getting to +2 at one point.  The group we played with won (64).  (In case you're wondering, Lynn was begging Matthew to smile when the photo was taken.)
Newell 2-ball

June 5, 2004

1st Pretty much a straight 2-ball -- women hit the tee shots on the odd holes, men on the even.  We started off with an eagle (Debbie drove it to the front of the green and I chipped in), and played well all day.  We shot 73, while 75 took 2nd (I think 79 was 3rd).
