2005

We had 11 tournaments on the schedule for 2005, and ended up with a wonderful season . . . I worked harder to find us some tournaments in Missouri this year, but could only come up with a couple of scrambles -- a little 9-hole fun evening at Eagle Knoll and a weekend-long event down in Camdenton -- so we ended up with 9 events up in Iowa this year, with two of them in the central Iowa area (Boone and Nevada).  I've got a bead on a couple more events down here for next year, though!

Fonda 2-ball (Sept 11) T-2nd Typical late-summer Iowa day - hot and windy.  Once again, our short game was less than stellar (hmmm, I sense a pattern here) and we had 7 bogies which more than negated our 3 birdies and we shot 38+36=74.  The winners shot 71.  Dad stopped by and walked the last 5 holes with us.
Fort Dodge (Lakeside)

Kate Nelson mixed best shot

(Aug 14)

1st This is Debbie's home course.  We started a little slow and were +1 after four holes.  Then we caught fire and finished the front nine with 3 birdies and an eagle for 32.  On the back we had 4 birdies and 2 bogeys for a 66 total, but fortunately that was good enough for the win! A pair of 71's tied for second.  Lynn and Matt also played and shot 83, which was good enough to win a flight, so it was a good weekend all around!
Ida Grove

2-couple best shot

(Aug 13)

(Buried) This was a 4-person best shot, and Lynn, Matt, Debbie and I had a great time playing in it.  Jerry came along as well.  The was our first visit to Ida Grove, and enjoyed the very unique medieval architecture.  We only managed 2 birdies the first time around, but learned a lot and grabbed four in the second nine for a 64, which was still good enough to win $100.  The winners shot 59.

2-ball

(July 17)

1st Very windy and very dry, and the course was still recovering from last month's flash flood ... felt a bit like playing links style golf, which I guess was appropriate on British Open weekend.  Debbie's putter was working great, which helped us avoid a bunch of bogies.  We shot 74 (36 + 38), and 83's were in second and third, so it would seem that everyone was struggling with the wind.
Lake City

2-ball

(July 16)

T-1st This was our first time playing Lake City and we liked the course ... small greens, thick rough ... the course was in very good condition.  We played very well the first 9 holes, shooting 33, but then had a few short game problems on the second 9 holes for a 37.  One other couple tied us at 70, and third place was at 74.
Honey Creek (Boone)

Mixed Best Shot

(June 26)

3rd We struggled a little bit early on, both because we were not hitting the ball well and also because we had never played the course before, but the key was that we managed to avoid bogies.  We started with 8 pars and then birdied 4 of the last 10 holes for a 68.  The winners were a couple of college kids who shot 65 and the runners-up shot 67.
Twin Lakes

2-ball

(June 25)

n/a Holes 3 and 4 were under water due to a bunch of rain that they received the night before, so they had to cancel the event.  This was our first totally rained out event since we started back up in 1999, so that's really pretty good.  We drove up to Algona and played 18 holes up there instead.  If it matters, Debbie beat me by one (heavy sigh). Lake Valley (Camdenton, MO)

His n' Hers Scramble

(June 10-12)

6th Our first time out of the top 5 since Sept 2003, but we still did pretty well.  This was one of the biggest events we had ever entered, with 102 teams.  We played 18 holes each day Saturday and Sunday, and we were quite fortunate to be paired a very nice couples both days.  We had 11 birdies and an eagle, but our chipping and putting were not as sharp as they needed to be so we also had 5 bogies for a 136 (68-68).  127 won and 133 was 5th..

Eagle Knoll (MO)

Bucks n' Does Scramble

(June 10)

1st A fun little Friday evening 9-hole mixed scramble.  We had to wait for the course to recover a little after a passing storm drenched it, but most of the teams who had signed up stuck it out and played.  We played pretty well in the mud, getting birdies on both par 5's and pars on all others for a 34.  There were two 35's right on our heels.
Newell

2-ball

(June 5)

2nd As with last year, this was essentially a "true" 2-ball tourney, as the ladies hit the tee shots on the odd holes and the guys hit them on the even holes.  Like yesterday, we struggled with our short game, and we sort of let the wheels come off in the middle of the second nine (going 7 over on 3 holes, starting with Greg hitting the tee shot OB on #14).  Still, we held on for an 83 (38+45) and finished second to a 79.
Indian Creek (Nevada)

Couples Best Shot

(June 4)

T-3rd This was our first time here, and we enjoyed it.  Our short game was not at all sharp, and we were really erratic on the second nine (4 birdies and 2 bogies), but we came home with 68 (35 + 33), trailing a 63 and a 65.  We won the card-back with the other 68 and took home $50 of Iowa beef certificates.
