Here's our schedule for this summer ... 10 events, clipped to 8 by rain and bad timing ... listed in reverse chronological order:

Lake Valley (Camdenton, MO)

Fall Couples Scramble

(Oct 10-11)

DNP

Well, once again we sent in our entry too late, even though we sent it in July 6!  Maybe next year?

Ryder Cup

(Sep 20)

Buried

Similar to yesterday, we were very erratic, and we let the wheels fall off a bit at the end, going +7 on our last 4 holes.  Also similar to yesterday, the weather was great and we had a lot of fun.  And just to clinch it, we won a flight today as well! We shot 36+38+43=117 ... I can't recall for sure what the winning score was, but I think it was 104 (which tells you how much tougher this event was than yesterday's).

History:  33+39+46=118 (T-6) in 2008 ... 33+38+38=109 (2nd) in 2007.

Twin Lakes (IA)

Ryder Cup

(Sep 19)

Buried

We shot better for the Best Ball 9 than we did the Best Shot 9, which might tell you how our day went.  Still, it was a gorgeous day and we had a lot of fun ... and we won a flight!  So shooting 33+37+34=104 didn't seem so bad after all!  (For those keeping score at home, a team shot 88 or something silly like that to win the event.)

History:  36+40+30=106 (buried) in 2008 ... 32+37+31=100 (4th) in 2007.

Mixed Scotch Doubles

(Aug 22-23)

10th

Interesting format for a mixed tournament ... Chapman Scotch Twosomes ... we struggled a bit on Saturday, especially with the slowness of the greens (at least four 3-putters, each started by an initial putt left very short), but we still managed a 77 which was good for T-7 after day 1 ... then on Sunday the wheels completely fell off for several holes and we had to rally with two birdies in the last four holes just to shoot 81 ... 158 was the 10th best score ... the good news is that they divided the 72 teams into 8 flights, which meant that we ended up winning the 1st flight!  142 won, and three teams tied for second at 149, including a very nice couple from Ankeny with whom we were lucky enough to play both days.

(no history ... this was a new event for us)

Mixed Scramble

(Aug 1-2)

T-5

Five birdies and a bogie (66) on Saturday just snuck us into the bottom of the Championship Flight.  On Sunday we were playing okay until our 14th hole and then leaked oil pretty hard for a couple of holes, but we still managed 5 birdies against 2 bogies (67), which turned out to be good enough to tie for fifth, much to our surprise ... in fact we were only 2 strokes out of second!  126 took first, followed by a pair of 131's and a 132.

History:  68-70 (buried) in 2008 ... 64-72 (9th) in 2007.

(yes, once again Greg forgot his camera ... thank goodness for camera phones!)

West Bend (IA)

2-ball

(July 12)

T-1

Wow, what a wacky day!  Neither of us played well the first time around, which in a 2-ball event can be disastrous, and we limped to the turn with 4 bogies and 2 doubles.  Then we somehow magically transformed into golfers during the break and came back with 3 bogies, 3 birdies and an eagle for a 44-34, which ended up tied for first!  (We lost the card-back, but we're still counting it as T-1!)

History:  77 (1st) in 2008 ... 75 (1st) in 2007 ... 71 (3rd) in 2006.

Lake City (IA)

2-ball

(July 11)

2nd

The tiny greens gave us some problems again this year.  We shot 38-37 (4 bogies and a birdie), which ended up being second to a 37-37.  But the biggest disappointment came when we learned that they had stopped giving meat as prizes!  So we had to settle for cash  ;-)

History:  79 (3rd) in 2008 ... 76 (1st) in 2007 ... 72 (1st) in 2006 ... 70 (T-1) in 2005.

His & Hers Scramble

(June 27-28)

T-5

We played pretty well Saturday ... we managed 3 birdies on each side and we avoided bogies altogether, which put us T-4 (albeit 6 strokes behind the leaders) after the first day.  We stumbled a bit on Sunday with bogies on 7 and 9 against only 3 birdies for the whole day.  But with the tees back and pins in tough places, none of the teams in the Championship Flight improved on Sunday, and only one team shot the same score, so our (65-70) 135 was good enough to tie for fifth (out of about 94 teams), our best finish ever in this tournament.  And we even had the added treat of playing on Sunday with a very nice couple who were the eventual winners (after two extra holes).  Finishing ahead of us were a pair of 125's, a 129, and a 133.

History:  75-70 (won B flight) in 2008 ... 68-71 (10th) in 2007 ... 69-70 (10th) in 2006.

Briggs Woods (Webster City)

2-person Best Shot

(June 7)

Buried

Greg didn't hit his irons well at all, and we both struggled with our putting on very slow greens.  In the end, the best we could garner was 3 birdies against 4 bogies (73), which was only good for about the middle of the pack.  Only a few other women played, but we still had the ability to cash if we had played even just a little bit better, as 68 was good for fourth ... 60, 62, and 64 rounded out the top three.  Maybe next year!

History:  69 (T-4) in 2004 (a mixed event).

Newell

Mixed 2-ball

(June 6)

Rained Out

We got rained out, even though the rain was about done when we got there ... of course, they waited until we had the cart out, our rain gear on, and were ready to go ... weenies ... must have been intimidated.  Instead, we drove down to Boone and played the old country club (now called Cedar Pointe) with Lynn and Jerry.

History:  80 (T-2) in 2007 ... 76 (T-2) in 2006 ... 83 (2nd) in 2005 ... 73 (1st) in 2004.
