Greg doesn't often play in individual tournaments, but he has
enjoyed playing in the annual Eagle Knoll (where he plays most of his
recreational golf) club championship since 2003 when
they opened it up to all golfers, and in 2005 he also played in "The Dawson"
at Jefferson City Country Club. Here are those results (in
reverse chronological order):
September 12-13, 2009. Eagle Knoll Club Championship.
After missing the tournament last year due to a conflict, I was glad that
they moved it into September, but I played awful this year, posting by
far my worst scores ever in this tournament. I hadn't played for three
weeks, and my one practice session Thursday night was not nearly enough.
I can't blame it on any one thing ... a lot of bad long shots (many of which
ended up as penalty strokes), a lot of missed putts, and a lot of poor short
shots ... all of which contributed to 9 doubles and 4 triples for a 92-93
(165 net)
... but I did hit one close on #2 on Saturday, which netted me a dozen Pro
V1's!
August 25-26, 2007. Eagle Knoll Club Championship. I
hit the ball okay but putted poorly on Saturday ... I only made 2 putts over
4 feet, and missed about 7 or 8 that were less than 8 feet ... then on
Sunday, I didn't even hit the ball very well and the pin placements were
brutal, a tough combination ... so I shot 85-90 for the weekend (157 net)
... couldn't avoid the big numbers, including 2 doubles, 3 triples and a
quad ... 148 won the net division and 154 won the gross division (both
illustrating how tough the course was playing) ...
August 26-27, 2006. Eagle Knoll Club Championship. The
weekend did not start well and I shot 90 on Saturday. I played better
on Sunday and shot 83, but a 155 net certainly wasn't in the running for
anything ...
August 20-21, 2005. Eagle Knoll Club Championship. 81
on Saturday (with no doubles!) and 86 on Sunday for a net 143, which was
good enough for a tie for first in the open net division. I won a
beautiful large picture of the 18th at Pebble Beach (which is now hanging in
my office at work).
August 6-7, 2005. "The Dawson" at Jefferson City Country Club.
I had played this course only once (last year), and I learned a lot during my
practice round on Friday. I hit a lot of irons off the tees, and I
punched out from under a lot of trees, but I stayed away from the big
numbers and shot 82-81 for a net 139, which was good enough to tie for
second in the "A Flight" (i.e., the handicap division). The winner shot
76-87 with a 13 hdcp for a net 137 to defend the title he won last year.
August 28-29, 2004. Eagle Knoll Club Championship. I
shot 80 on Saturday, which was my best round ever on that dang course at
that time, then
struggled on Sunday to a 89. Still, my 145 net score was good enough
for second place in the open net division, although the winner shot
something like 136 (I forgot the exact number).
August 23-24, 2003. Eagle Knoll Club Championship.
This was the first year that EK opened up their tournament to non-members.
I shot 87-84 (147 net), which I assumed would be far out of the money, and
the only reason I hung around after finishing was because it was so hot and
I wanted to cool down in the club house before jumping into the truck for
the drive home. However, my score turned out to be good enough to tie
for first in the open net division, so almost two hours later I had to get
my clubs back out and put my shoes back on for a playoff. I never did
get loose and played by far my worst hole of the weekend on the first
playoff hole --> I pulled my tee shot O.B., then rolled my third shot, then
topped my fourth into a hazard, hit my sixth over the green and got
up-and-down for an easy 8. Incredibly, my opponent had just as much
trouble and also had an 8. On #2, I put my tee shot on the green and
two-putted for a par, while my opponent made bogie. I won a really
cool little statue of a golfer.
